Thi Lor Su, the largest and most beautiful waterfall in Thailand

“Thi Lo Su” Waterfall in Thailand is located in Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, Umphang District, Tak Province, 3 kilometers from the district office. Thi Lo Su is Karen language. means black waterfall It looks like a large limestone mountain waterfall. Located on an altitude of 900 meters above sea level caused by Huai Kla Tho. The whole river falls into a steep cliff with strong water flowing throughout the year.

The width of the waterfall is about 500 meters, flowing in cascades with a height of about 300 meters, surrounded by complete rainforest. It is the largest waterfall in Thailand. And the 6th largest in Asia, in fact, must be pronounced as “Thi Lor Chu” and is a noun in the Karen language meaning “waterfall”. ” or “Ti” means “water”, “Lor” or “Mule” means “fall”, but “Chu” is not close in meaning, so there is an effort to make it a meaningful word because “Su” means “Black” led to the name “Thi Lor Su” and translated as “Black Waterfall”

It is a large waterfall and is especially beautiful during the rainy season. From June 1 to November 31, during the rainy season, the water in the stream will increase, causing the waterfall to be wider than other seasons. The route must be closed to prevent danger to route users and to maintain road conditions from damage. which will change to travel by rubber boat and walk about 12 km.

Admission to the waterfall cannot bring food, snacks, and water bottles. Items brought must be deposited at the checkpoint to reduce waste around the waterfall.

From Umphang town, you will need to get on a rubber boat down the Mae Klong River. Passing through various hot springs and rapids along the route that the boat cruises through, there are beautiful and still very natural scenery. When reaching the halfway point, tourists will see the beauty of Thi Lo Cho waterfall falling from a high cliff into Mae Klong River Not far after that, it will pass Sai Rung Waterfall. But if coming to travel during the winter – summer between 1 Dec – 31 April, you can use the car to enter the waterfall. Therefore, it is the most convenient time to travel. Whether it’s a round trip or staying overnight. If you travel at the right time, you will see a rainbow caused by the light that strikes the spray of the waterfall. There is also a waterfall along the way to stop and play in the water as well. The duration for rafting is about 3-4 hours depending on the strength of the current in each period. After getting off the rubber boat, you have to walk on foot to the tent camping point at Um Phang Wildlife Sanctuary for another 10 kilometers. The first 1 kilometer is a path through the forest. The rest of the road is packed with gravel roads. The condition of the route is uphill at some parts, especially at the beginning, it is mostly walking uphill. The middle and the end will be downhill. The next day, we will appreciate the beauty of Thi Lo Su Waterfall. Tips for traveling to Thi Lor Su Waterfall in each season

Go during the beginning of the rainy season, June-July, the condition of the rubber boat route is very beautiful. New trees grow, fresh green, beautiful forests, beautiful waterfalls.

Go during the rainy season, Aug.-Oct., lots of water, but have to walk in. There are few tourists because they don’t want to walk.

Going in the early winter, no rain, late Nov. – Dec. Traveling comfortably, no need to walk and drive to the camp, but there are quite a lot of tourists and the water starts to recede.

Traveling to Umphang by yourself

1. Take a bus from Bangkok – Mae Sot by using the service of Transport Company 999 (Bor Kor Sor 999).

***Recommended Book a ticket from Bangkok around 21.00 and book a return ticket from Umphang around 21.00. It takes about 8 hours from Bangkok to Mae Sot. We will arrive at the destination early in the morning so we have time to prepare ourselves for connecting to the minibus.

2. After arriving at Mae Sot Bus Station, take a minibus Mae Sot – Umphang. The bus will start running for the first time at 7.30 am. It is recommended to prepare medicine for car sickness. Because traveling to Umphang has to go through a route of 1,219 curves, the fare is about 140 baht, the journey time is about 6 hours.
